Stewart ‘Gossy’ Gossnell, based at Lambourn trainer Richard Hughes’ Weathercock House, has won the Rider/Groom award at the Godolphin Stable and Stud Awards 2019, held at at the Jumeriah Carlton Tower on Monday evening.  After accepting his prize, Stewart joked: “I just love horses, I love all animals, I’d rather animals than humans any day.” He also dedicated his award to his mum Valerie.

Richard said: “Stewart’s attitude to treat all the horses in the yard as individuals, always putting the horses’ wellbeing first no matter what duty he is performing.”

Stud and stable staff are the backbone of the horseracing industry, and Godolphin believes their hard work and dedication should be celebrated. Grooms, exercise riders, office workers and foaling crews… the list of unsung heroes within the industry goes on and on – and these awards are a way for racing to say thank you. They were devised by Sheikh Mohammed, whose passionate commitment to young people and the future of the industry is well known.
